BIOGRAPHY
Siobhan McLaughlin (b. 1994) graduated from Edinburgh University in 2019 with a First Class MA (Hons) in Fine Art. Siobhan has since been awarded the SSA Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Award at the Royal Scottish Academy, a film commission from the Tate’s British Art Network, an RSA Residency for Scotland at Cromarty Arts Trust and a Visual Art Scotland Cornwall Exchange Residency.
Siobhan is also a curator – she was Arts Editor and Researched for a publication of W Gordon and Jay Smith’s Scottish art collection and is the curator of a centenary exhibition of Alan Davie’s work in collaboration with Dovecot Studios.
Siobhan uses the compositional device of sewing alternative materials to create abstract-landscape paintings. She has been sewing remnant materials to form the base of her paintings since 2016, and is fascinated by the interaction between paint and material.
She describes her technique of creating her masterpieces – “Walking in the landscape, I sketch and gather different forms and a particular spectrum of colours for my paintings…taking natural colourings of the land out of their original context, the abstract forms elevate each colour : a speck of heather becomes a bulbous form of unusual purple…Weaving together remnant materials with layers of paint creates underlying rhythms and currents.”
