JOHN McCLENAGHEN

BIOGRAPHY

Born in Falkirk in 1964, John McClenaghen studied Fine Art at the Glasgow School of Art (1983 – 1987) being awarded a BA (Honours). It was here that John gained experience in drawing, mixed media, film and eventually returned to painting where he is drawn to its uncanny ability to capture the sensations and dynamism of the world around us and to relate to human experiences.

John continued his studies, achieving a PGCE (Further and Higher Education) at the University of Huddersfield (1996), a MA in Fine Art at the University of Liverpool and the University of Chester (2009), and becoming a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2007).

John is now a Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at Glyndŵr University and has been published by Q-Art and Black Dog with his contributions to book chapters, as well as for a number of Conference Papers.

John’s way of looking at the landscape has been informed by being part of a Scottish farming family on his mother’s side – being the grandson of a ploughman and nephew to a shepherd and a farm foreman.

John believes that he only starts to see a place properly as he draws or paints it…"as I move the paint it’s a process of having a conversation with what is going on in a transitory moment in a moving, changing landscape…through the rhythm of work, I am trying to move from the representation of something seen to the reconstruction of something felt".
