Garry Brander is an art moderniser.
He has taken the early breakthroughs in (landscape) expressionism (1980’s and 1990’s) and has pushed these gains to reach new much higher and more modern boundaries.
Brander is undoubtedly one of the highest impact artists of this generation.
He studied at GSA (2007-11) in a period when ‘conceptual art’ (the Turner Prize) dominated. Brander has cleverly managed to incorporate some of the lessons and progression of ‘conceptual art’ into his landscapes creating a huge adjustment and step-forward into modern-relevant paintings that meet current art appetites and thinking.
His paintings are so standout that he creates layers of admirers (from the primary buyers to the secondary, tertiary etc viewers that come across his paintings in their friend’s home).
Indeed, we frequently have conversations that start, “We saw the work of an artist, I think his name was Brander…"
