TOM ALLAN MA (Hons) ARBS PAI

BIOGRAPHY

Tom Allan initially studied English Language and Literature at the University of Glasgow (1965-1969), graduating with an MA Honours. Tom subsequently trained as a Secondary School teacher at Jordanhill School and went on to teach English before turning his attention to sculpting after attending classes at Glasgow School of Art in sculpture and life drawing.


Tom trained with stone masons and marble cutters in Scotland and Italy and has been sculpting full time since 1999. Tom also teaches stone carving at the Glasgow Sculpture Studios.


Tom works in stone, travertine, limestone, slate, alabaster, sandstone, granite and bronze, and his works are frequently exhibited at the RGI, PAI, RSA and VAS. He was elected as an Associate of the Royal British Society of Sculptors in 2006 and his sculptures are in collections in Britain, Europe and the Americas.



Tom uses both ancient and modern techniques in stone carvings, creating both figurative and abstract forms.

As stated in glasgowsculpture.com, Tom’s commissions include “a sculpture for Plane Castle, Stirlingshire (2003-5); life-size statues in Carrara marble of Pope John Paul II, St Francis Xavier’s Church, Lanarkshire (2006); St Peregrine, Carfin Pilgrimage Centre, Lanarkshire (2008); the Memorial to William Fyfe & Sons, Fairlie; and the Holocaust Memorial, Banja Bashta, Serbia (2008). His work in Glasgow includes Caring, Pollokshaws Medical Centre (2005); stone work for projects by Castlemilk Environmental Trust and Penilee Public Art; and the Lord Kelvin Cenotaph, Necropolis (2007).”
